Moore dominates at the National Bank Fredericton Open
Hielke Moore of Fredericton established himself again as the guy to beat in New Brunswick tennis with a pair of titles at the National Bank Fredericton Open this past weekend at Wilmot Park. He claimed the men’s singles title with a convincing 6/0, 6/0 win over Mitchell Nel of Fredericton and also won the men’s doubles title teaming up with Noah Cameron-Howe of Fredericton to defeat Jeff Crossman of Riverview and partner Dan Godwin of Fredericton 6/3, 6/0. Moore, who just returned from his freshman year of NCAA tennis in Connecticut where he was named a MAAC conference second team all-star at the #6 singles position, lost only 9 games total in 5 matches played over the weekend. Moore defeated Minh Nguyen of Fredericton 6/1, 6/1 to advance to the singles final while Nel took out Dan Godwin 6/2, 6/2. In ladies singles, Monique LeClair of Fredericton pulled off a big comeback to defeat Rose Arsenault of Fredericton in a hard fought final winning by scores of 1/6, 7/6, 10/8. In ladies doubles, Sally McAllister and Colette Beaulieu of Fredericton defeated Rose Arsenault and Monique LeClair by scores of 6/0, 6/1. Arsenault finally got a title in her 3rd attempt teaming up with Dax Phillips of Fredericton to win the mixed doubles event with a 6/1, 6/2 victory over Andy Hashey and Colette Beaulieu of Fredericton. In the 4.0 men’s singles final, Gabriel Lacroix of Fredericton defeated Finn McMorran of Fredericton 6/0, 6/3. In men’s open consolation, Jeff Crossman of Riverview defeated Martin Gallant of Memramcook and in lades consolation, Rachel Schmidt of Fredericton defeated Anna Gallagher of Fredericton.
Next up on the summer tournament schedule is the National Bank East Coast Open which takes place on June 29 – July 1 in Moncton, Riverview and Dieppe on 20 courts. As many as 200 of the best players in Atlantic Canada are expected to attend with play for juniors, masters, and open players.
