The Rogers First Set Rising Stars Circuit, formerly known as the Future Stars Circuit, continues to be a pivotal stepping stone for Canada’s young tennis players, offering a competitive yet supportive environment to hone their skills. Held in Fredericton, New Brunswick this month, the event showcased some of the brightest emerging talent from across the region.

The Rising Stars Circuit was launched in 2015 with the mission of introducing and transitioning young players into competitive tennis. Nine years later, its impact is evident, as its alumni include several accomplished athletes who have gone on to achieve significant milestones in the tennis world. Notable players who have qualified and competed at the Junior Nationals include R. Reut, M. Foisy, B. Hamilton, V. Virmani, R. Galwa, and A. Mahadevaswamy. Additionally, several alumni have represented their province at the prestigious Canada Games, and over 15 players have qualified for and competed in Junior Atlantics.

For 8-year-old Penelope Gallant, this was an exciting start to her tennis journey. The Fredericton native has made strong improvements in her game with the support of her mother (who also plays tennis) and the use of a home-made tennis wall that she practices on frequently. Despite the tough circuit competition, Gallant showed excellent agility, court awareness, and a positive attitude throughout the event, this performance earned her a win/loss record of 2 and 1 in the Red Ball division. Her performance was particularly impressive given this was her first competitive experience at this level.

“It’s amazing to see the next generation of junior players begin their competitive career and the level in which they do it seems to improve year over year. Very excited to see them continue to compete and enjoy what the sport has to offer!”

-Dan Godwin, Head Pro – Abony Family Tennis Center

The Rogers First Set Rising Stars Circuit is known for its tiered level of competition, with athletes across various ball types battling it out for valuable leaderboard points. It’s an opportunity not only for up-and-coming players to test their skills but also for them to learn from experienced coaches and mentors who guide them in their development. The event is singles focused with many players stepping into the competitive spotlight for the first time.

Gallant’s debut at this month’s event marks the beginning of what could be a promising transition from recreational to competitive play. Other players were impressed by her ability to remain composed under pressure, a trait that bodes well for her future in tennis. As Gallant and other young players continue to gain experience through the Rising Stars Circuit, they are following in the footsteps of past alumni who have gone on to represent New Brunswick on national and international stages.

With nine years of success behind it, the Rogers First Set Rising Stars Circuit is clearly fulfilling its mission of providing a springboard for the next generation of tennis champions. Players like Penelope highlight the importance of programs like this, and as the competition continues to evolve, it’s clear that more rising stars are ready to emerge from this talented group.
