Both Glenn Cleland and Marc Pepin were in Montreal this past week taking part in the Senior Men’s Eastern Indoor Nationals. And both men were registered in the same events: 55+ men’s singles & 55+ men’s doubles. In the singles event, Cleland won his round of 32 match against Patrick Shanahan of Ontario 6/0, 6/1. He then defeated #5 seed Giovanni Forte of Quebec 6/4, 6/2. Pepin, seeded #2 in the draw, had a first round bye and then defeated Miguel Carrasco of Quebec in the round of 16 by scores of 6/2, 6/2. The luck of the draw then had Cleland & Pepin meet in the quarter finals where Cleland came out on top with a 3 set victory by scores of 6/3, 0/6, 6/2. This moved Cleland on to the semi finals where he won his 4th match in a row taking out another #5 seed, Patrice Rousso of Quebec, when Rousso retired when the score was 6/7, 6/4. Cleland then faced the #1 seed, Cary Wilson of Quebec but came up short in the finals losing by scores of 6/3, 6/1 and finished 2nd overall in the draw of 24 men. Pepin moved on to the consolation draw where he won his first match 6/3, 4/6, 10/1 over Mark Girder of Ontario but was then forced to withdraw from his next match and finished tied for 7th overall. In the doubles draw though, Pepin and his partner from Quebec, Michel Lortie, were the #3 seed and they advanced to the semi finals with a win in the quarter finals over Auger/Hodge of Quebec 6/0, 6/3 but fell in the semis to the #2 seeds MacDonald/Pellew of Ontario losing 6/2, 7/5. Cleland and partner Girdler fell in the first round of doubles play to Donders/Marinic of Ontario 6/2, 6/2.
